Advances in Haploid Production in Higher Plants ebook
Springer | 2008-12-05 | ISBN: 1402088531 | 348 pages | PDF | 12,8 MB
The discovery of haploid Datura plants in 1964 initiated great excitement in plant breeding and genetics communities. Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in activities especially in developing protocols, identifying genes and mechanisms and large scale commercial take up.
The identification of controlling genes has driven functional genomic studies which now link in with studies in gene expression, metabolism and changes in cell ultra-structure. World wide take up by plant breeders has been no less impressive and valuable haploid technologies is increasingly patent protected. The intense activity in haploid research has also resulted in unexpected findings with novel applications.
The core of this book is based on the international symposium on "Haploidy in Higher Plants III", (Vienna 2006), which attracted top international experts in the field. Other invited contributions have been included to provide a rounded view of activities.

Gene Avatars: The Neo-Darwinian Theory of Evolution
Product Description
`Why life?' Questions of this type were for a long time the prerogative of philosophers who left the `how' question to scientists. Nowadays, Darwin's successors no longer have any qualms about addressing the `why' as well as the `how'. Over a century ago, Darwin modestly admitted having 'thrown some light on the origin of species - this mystery of mysteries'. Two major advances in the following decades helped biologists answer many of the questions he left unsolved. The first was the discovery of the laws of heredity, the second that of DNA. Both provided Darwinian theory with the foundations that were lacking and led to the all-embracing neo-Darwinian synthesis. Since then, Theodosius Dobzhansky's aphorism `nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution' has proven true more than once. This does not suit everyone, as evolutionist ideas have not lost their power to cause a scandal.
Darwin toppled man from his pedestal. Evolutionary genetics - the subject of this book - sends the individual crashing. Considered until recently to be the target of selection and the focus of evolution, the individual has been usurped by the gene. The individual is nothing but the gene's avatar

Book Description:
This book covers elements of both the data-driven comparative modeling approach to structure prediction and also recent attempts to simulate folding using explicit or simplified models. Despite the unsolved mystery of how a protein folds, advances are being made in predicting the interactions of proteins with other molecules, such as small ligands, nucleic acids or other proteins. Also rapidly advancing are the methods for solving the inverse folding problem, the problem of finding a sequence to fit a structure. This book focuses on the various computational methods for prediction, their successes and their limitations, from the perspective of their most well known practitioners.

Book Description:
Pathology of Laboratory Rodents and Rabbits has become a standard text for both veterinary pathologists and veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine. Newly recognized infectious diseases continue to emerge and molecular methods for studying infectious agents are becoming widely used for the classification of these and previously known pathogens. With the ongoing development and perfection of genetic engineering techniques, the use of genetically engineered mice in the research laboratory continues to grow exponentially.
This new edition features updates throughout with increased emphasis on timely topics such as infectious diseases in genetically engineered mice. Diseases covered include viral infections, bacterial infections, parasitic diseases, nutritional and metabolic disorders, behavioral disorders, aging and degenerative disorders, environment-related disease, and neoplasms. Organized by species, coverage includes mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Veterinary pathologists, laboratory animal veterinarians, and students will appreciate the concise organization and easily accessible information on key diagnostic features, differential diagnoses, and significance of diseases.

Book Description:
Throughout the biological world, bacteria thrive predominantly in surface attached, matrix enclosed, multicellular communities or biofilms, as opposed to isolated planktonic cells. This choice of lifestyle is not trivial, as it involves major shifts in the use of genetic information and cellular energy, and has profound consequences for bacterial physiology and survival. Growth within a biofilm can thwart immune function and antibiotic therapy and thereby complicate the treatment of infectious diseases, especially chronic and foreign device-associated infections. Modern studies of many important biofilms have advanced well beyond the descriptive stage, and have begun to provide molecular details of the structural, biochemical and genetic processes that drive biofilm formation and its dispersion. There is much diversity in the details of biofilm development among various species, but there are also commonalities. In most species, environmental and nutritional conditions greatly influence biofilm development. Similar kinds of adhesive molecules often promote biofilm formation in diverse species. Signaling and regulatory processes that drive biofilm development are often conserved, especially among related bacteria. Knowledge of such processes holds great promise for efforts to control biofilm growth and combat biofilm-associated infections.
