Monte Carlo Methods in Financial Engineering (Stochastic Modelling and Applied Probability)

Author(s): Paul Glasserman
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition
Date : 2003
Pages : 602
Format : PDF
OCR :
Quality :
Language : English
ISBN-10 : 0387004513
ISBN-13 : 9780387004518

Monte Carlo simulation has become an essential tool in the pricing of derivative securities and in risk management. These applications have, in turn, stimulated research into new Monte Carlo methods and renewed interest in some older techniques.

This book develops the use of Monte Carlo methods in finance and it also uses simulation as a vehicle for presenting models and ideas from financial engineering. It divides roughly into three parts. The first part develops the fundamentals of Monte Carlo methods, the foundations of derivatives pricing, and the implementation of several of the most important models used in financial engineering. The next part describes techniques for improving simulation accuracy and efficiency. The final third of the book addresses special topics: estimating price sensitivities, valuing American options, and measuring market risk and credit risk in financial portfolios.

The most important prerequisite is familiarity with the mathematical tools used to specify and analyze continuous-time models in finance, in particular the key ideas of stochastic calculus. Prior exposure to the basic principles of option pricing is useful but not essential.

The book is aimed at graduate students in financial engineering, researchers in Monte Carlo simulation, and practitioners implementing models in industry.

Beautiful Mathematics Formulae

Mathematics
It is amazing how 2 divergent series and sequence converge to give Euler's constant:
As n goes to infinity we have (1+1/2+1/3+1/4+...+1/n)-log(n)=0.577.

Mathematical Jokes

Cos(x), sin(x) and e^(x) go to a party. Sin(x) and cos(x) are partying away but e^(x) is miserable and anti social. Sin(x) and cos(x) go up to e^(x) and say 'what's wrong, why don't you integrate?'
It doesn't make any difference does it?

Diary

After a good six months I managed to get a lovely bike ride around the local county lanes. Hope to do the same tomorrow. The weather seems to be getting better and really looking forward to the summer.

Sport

Rather disappointing performance by Arsenal today. They lost 2-1 against boro.mm

What is mathematics?

Paul Erdos said mathematics is like a machine which converts coffee into theorems and proof.
Marcus in his book "Finding Moonshine" says mathematician is a pattern searcher.
Lord Kelvin asked the question, whom do you call a mathematician?
He answered a mathematician is a person who finds the integral of e^(-x^2) from plus infinity to minus infinity as easy as you find 2x2=4.

Computer Algebra Recipes eBook

Computer Algebra Recipes: An Advanced Guide to Scientific Modeling
Pages: 372

Modern computer algebra systems are revolutionizing the teaching and learning of mathematically intensive subjects in science and engineering, enabling students to explore increasingly complex and computationally intensive models that provide analytic solutions, animated numerical solutions, and complex two- and three-dimensional graphic displays.

This self-contained text benefits from a spiral structure that regularly revisits the general topics of graphics, symbolic computation, and numerical simulation with increasing intricacy at each turn. The text is built around a large number of computer algebra worksheets or "recipes" that have been designed using MAPLE to provide tools for problem solving and to stimulate critical thinking. No prior knowledge of MAPLE is assumed. All relevant commands are introduced on a need-to-know basis and are indexed for easy reference. Each recipe is associated with a scientific model or method and an interesting or amusing story designed to both entertain and enhance concept comprehension and retention. All recipes are included on the CD-ROM enclosed with the book.

Aimed at third- and fourth-year undergraduates in science and engineering, the text contains numerous examples in disciplines that will challenge students progressing in mathematics, physics, engineering, game theory, and physical chemistry. Computer Algebra Recipes: An Advanced Guide to Mathematical Modeling can serve as an effective computational science text, with a set of problems following each section of recipes to enable readers to apply and confirm their understanding. The book may also be used as a reference, for self-study, or as the basis of an on-line course.
